Exploring Mount Kaputar National Park, NSW

20161005_151847Mount Kaputar is located on the edge of NSW north west slopes of the Nandewar Range. About one hours drive from Narrabri, Northern NSW. Mount Kaputar has many activity’s to offer, bush walking, bird watching, mountain bike riding, horse riding and camping. The road into park is very winding and narrow but also offers an amazing view as you drive further up the mountain. The stunning rock formations are truly amazing. The park offers 2 camp grounds. (more camping info) Mount Kaputar offers many walks to chose from, short relaxing strolls to admire the scenery, waterfalls and wildlife. Or the more challenging longer walks throughout the park. The summit walk is a short dsc_0376challenging walk approx 2km from Dawsons Springs camp ground, when arriving at the summit there is a platform with an awesome 360 deg view. This walk is a very popular at sunset and sunrise to experience a view that highlights the northern NSW mountain ranges. Driving up towards the summit there are many viewing platforms to stop and look out at the amazing neighboring countryside. Mount Kaputar has picnic and BBQ areas where you can spend the day exploring or pack the camping gear and spend weekend or a week on this amazing mountain.

dsc_0265Sawn Rock is also in the National Park, unfortunately it can’t be reach from Mt Kaputar, You need to turn off the Newell Highway and follow Killarney Gap Road to Sawn Rocks. (directions here) Sawn Rocks is a short 750 meter easy walk from the carpark, and a strong reminder of the areas volcanic past. The rock formation is amazing on the rock face and so are the rocks fallen from the cliffs, Sawn Rocks is a must visit if you are in the area.
